Claude Code from your Android phone
Claude Code runs in a terminal, so it can run on your own server and keep working while you are away from the desk. Termexa is the SSH terminal you use to look in on it from Android, answer its questions and give it the next task.
Termexa is an independent SSH client. It is not made by, affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic or OpenAI. Claude Code and Codex are their respective owners' products and run on your own machine with your own account; Termexa only carries the terminal to your phone.
The problem
- A long task stops at a permission prompt the moment you walk away, and waits until you are back.
- On a phone you cannot see whether it is still working, finished or stuck.
- Slash commands, multi-line prompts and Esc are awkward to type on a phone keyboard.
Set it up
- Run Claude Code inside tmux or Herdr on the server. For example save
tmux new -A -s agentas the host's command to run and startclaudein it. If the phone disconnects, the session and Claude Code keep going, and Termexa reattaches later. See tmux on Android. - Turn on alerts. With Terminal alerts on in Settings, Termexa notifies you when a terminal you are not looking at rings its bell, disconnects, or finishes a long command (with shell integration). In Herdr, panes where an agent is waiting for input are marked Needs input in the Navigator.
- Answer from the toolbar. Use the arrows and Enter to pick an option in a prompt, Esc to interrupt, and Ctrl+J or Shift+Enter for a new line without sending. Voice input turns speech into text in the input line.
- Add the agent commands. In Settings → Shortcut panel → Plugins, add agent slash commands. Each key types the command and leaves Enter to you, so you can check it first.
Slash commands one tap away
Commands shared by Claude Code and Codex: /compact, /model, /status, /review, /init.
Claude Code only: /clear, /resume, /rewind, /context, /cost, /permissions, /help.
Agent keys: Ctrl+O (conversation history), Ctrl+T (task list), Ctrl+J (new line), and Ctrl+X Ctrl+E (open the prompt in an external editor).
More ways to keep it moving
- Scheduled messages. Queue the next instruction, Enter included, for a set time. It is sent with the screen off as long as the terminal window stays open, at most a few minutes late in deep sleep.
- Quick messages. Save prompts you send often and insert them with one tap.
- Attach a screenshot or file. Pick a photo, a camera shot or a file; it is uploaded to the server and its path is typed for you to reference in your prompt.
- Copy from the server. Text copied in tmux or the agent (OSC 52) can go to the phone clipboard, after you allow it for that host.
- Check the changes. Open the same host's file window to read the edited files, or open a second terminal for
git diff.
Frequently asked questions
Does Claude Code run on the phone?
No. Claude Code runs on your server or computer as usual. Termexa connects to that machine over SSH so you can use its terminal from Android.
Is Termexa an official Claude Code app?
No. Termexa is an independent SSH client and is not affiliated with Anthropic.
Does Termexa see my Claude account or API key?
No. Claude Code signs in on your server. Termexa only carries the terminal session over SSH and has no server of its own.
Do I need tmux or Herdr?
Not strictly, but it is strongly recommended: inside tmux or Herdr, Claude Code keeps running when the phone disconnects.
Will I be notified when Claude Code needs approval?
Termexa notifies you when a background terminal rings its bell or disconnects, and when a long command finishes with shell integration. In Herdr, panes waiting for input are marked in the Navigator.
